Knight designed a machine in 1871 for flat-bottomed bags. In 1883, Charles Stilwell made a bag with pleated sides. These were called "Self-Opening Sacks" because they were easy to use.

There are many interesting facts about how these bags perform. In 1912, a grocer named Walter Deubener added cord handles to bags. His "Deubener Shopping Bags" could carry up to 34 kg of weight. By 1915, he was selling over a million of them every year. Some paper sacks are very strong and can hold up to 50 kg. In 2015, the Paper Bag Co in the UK made the world's largest paper shopping bag. This huge bag was even recorded by Guinness World Records.
