Most are made from a strong material called kraft paper. This paper is made from wood fibers found in softwood trees. Because they come from wood, paper bags biodegrade, which means they break down naturally. This makes them different from plastic bags.

People use them for many tasks. They carry groceries, books, clothing, and even electronics. Some bags are even used to carry heavy dry goods like cement or animal feed.

Making these bags is a very organized way of working. For heavy-duty paper sacks, machines use an automatic process. First, a machine called a tuber forms the paper into a long tube. It uses glue to join the edges of the paper layers together. Next, a knife cuts the tube into individual pieces. These pieces move to a machine called a bottomer. This machine folds and seals the bottom of the bag. Some bags are open at the top to be filled. Other bags, like cement sacks, have a valve for filling.

Many smart people helped improve the paper bag over time. Francis Wolle was a schoolteacher in Pennsylvania who invented a machine for them in 1852. He and his brother started the Union Paper Bag Company. In 1853, an English maker named James Baldwin patented a way to make square-bottomed bags. Later, Margaret E. Knight designed a machine in 1871 for flat-bottomed bags. In 1883, Charles Stilwell made a bag with pleated sides. These were called "Self-Opening Sacks" because they were easy to use.

There are many interesting facts about how these bags perform. In 1912, a grocer named Walter Deubener added cord handles to bags. His "Deubener Shopping Bags" could carry up to 34 kg of weight. By 1915, he was selling over a million of them every year. Some paper sacks are very strong and can hold up to 50 kg. In 2015, the Paper Bag Co in the UK made the world's largest paper shopping bag. This huge bag was even recorded by Guinness World Records.

You might see paper bags in many parts of your daily life. Some people use a "brown bag" to carry a packed lunch to school. Other bags are made with a thin layer of plastic called polyethylene. This coating helps protect the contents from moisture, grease, or bacteria. You might notice stores using paper bags more often now. This is because many places are banning lightweight plastic bags to help the environment. Even though plastic bags became popular in the 1970s, paper bags are making a big comeback.
