A paper cup is a handy tool made for one-time use.

Most paper cups are not just plain paper. They have a thin coating of plastic or wax inside. This coating acts like a shield to keep liquid from soaking through. Without this layer, the paper would get soggy and fall apart. Some special cups even have an extra layer of air. This layer works like a blanket to keep hot drinks warm.

Making these cups is a very precise way of working. First, makers use a special thick paper called cup board. This paper must be stiff and strong so it holds its shape. In the past, people used clay to stop leaks. They would spin the cup very fast to coat the walls with clay. This made the drink taste like cardboard, so they switched to wax. Today, most cups use a thin layer of polyethylene. This is a type of plastic that seals the seams together.

Long ago, people often shared the same glass at water fountains. This caused big worries about spreading germs. In 1908, a biology professor named Alvin Davison studied this in Pennsylvania schools. His work helped lead to bans on shared drinking glasses. An inventor named Lawrence Luellen wanted to help people stay healthy. He created a machine that gave out single-use cups for just one cent.

Luellen's invention became very famous in the United States. He first called his product the "Health Kup." Later, the name changed to the Dixie Cup. This name came from a line of dolls made in New York. By 1917, paper cups had mostly replaced shared glasses on American trains.

The Dixie Cup Company even moved to a factory in Wilson, Pennsylvania. That factory had a huge water tank shaped like a cup on top.

Today, scientists are finding new ways to make cups that are better for the Earth. Some companies now make paper from discarded pineapple leaves. This material is called Pinyapel and it breaks down very quickly. Other new cups use special coatings that make them easier to recycle.

This is important because most plastic-lined cups are hard to recycle. Finding ways to use less plastic helps keep our world clean and healthy.
