Pulp is a thick, fibrous material used to make paper.

It is made by separating tiny fibers from wood or other plants. These fibers come from things like trees, crops, or even old rags. This material is the main ingredient for almost all paper products. Without pulp, we would not have the books or paper we use every day. It is a vital part of how we make things to write on.

To make pulp, we must separate the fibers from the rest of the plant. Wood has three main parts: cellulose fibers, lignin, and hemicelluloses. The cellulose fibers are what we want for paper. Lignin is like a glue that holds all the fibers together.

In chemical pulping, we use heat and chemicals in large tanks called digesters. These chemicals break down the lignin glue so the fibers can float free. In mechanical pulping, machines use metal discs to physically tear the fibers apart.

People have been making paper-like materials for a very long time. Long before Cai Lun invented papermaking in China around AD 105, people used papyrus. They also used amate, which was made from unprocessed plant materials. Early Chinese paper used fibers from the paper mulberry plant and hemp. By the 6th century, farmers in China even grew mulberry trees just for pulp.

Later, in the 13th century, rag paper spread to Europe.

As the world changed, the way we make pulp changed too. In the 1800s, people began using more wood to meet high demands. In the 1840s, Friedrich Gottlob Keller in Germany and Charles Fenerty in Nova Scotia both developed mechanical pulping. Later, Carl F. Dahl created the kraft process in 1879. This chemical method makes very strong fibers.

Today, wood pulp is a huge industry. In 2006, global production reached 175 million tons. Canada and the United States are two of the largest sources.

You can think of pulp like the ingredients in a thick soup.

Just as you might separate noodles from broth, we separate fibers from wood. We can even use recycled paper to make new pulp. This is called deinked pulp, where chemicals wash away the old ink. This process helps us reuse the same fibers over and over. It is a clever way to turn old things into new ones.
