Fiber

A fiber is a substance that is much longer than it is wide. These long, thin strands are used to build many different things. Some fibers are found in nature, while others are made by people.

Natural fibers can come from plants, animals, or even minerals from the ground. Because they have different strengths, we use them for many different jobs. Some help us make soft clothes, while others help build strong machines.

Natural fibers are grouped by where they come from. Vegetable fibers come from plants and often use cellulose to stay together. You might know cotton, hemp, or jute, which are used for cloth and paper. Wood fibers also come from trees and are used to make paper products. Animal fibers are mostly made of proteins. This includes soft wool from sheep or shiny silk from silkworms. Even some minerals, like the asbestos group, can form long fibers in nature.

People also create artificial fibers in many ways. Semi-synthetic fibers start with natural materials like wood or seaweed. Scientists use chemical processes to change these into things like rayon. Fully synthetic fibers are different because they come from chemicals like petrochemicals. Nylon and polyester are common examples of these man-made strands. These artificial options are helpful because they can be engineered to be exactly what a maker needs.

There is a long history of making and discovering these materials. In the early 1980s, microfibers were invented in Japan. These are ultra-fine fibers that are much thinner than normal ones. In 1986, a company in Germany called Hoechst A.G. began making them in Europe. By 1990, the company DuPont brought these microfibers to the United States. Today, we use these tiny fibers in many different types of textiles and filters.

Fibers connect to many things you see every day. You might wear a shirt made of cotton or polyester. You might even use paper made from wood fibers. Some special fibers are built for very tough jobs. Carbon fiber is extremely strong and used in engineering. Optical fibers are made from purified quartz and can carry light through a bundle.
