Fiber crop

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Fiber crops are special plants grown for their strong parts. We call these parts fibers. People use them to make many things. You might use cloth from them for clothes. You might use rope from them for work. They are even used to make paper. These plants have a lot of cellulose. Cellulose is what gives the fibers their strength.

There are different ways to get these fibers. Some come from the stem. These are called bast fibers. To get them, people use a way called retting. This uses tiny microbes to clean the plant. Other fibers are called hard fibers. They come from the whole plant bundle. People use a way called decortication to get them. This can be done by hand or machine. Finally, surface fibers come from the plant skin. A machine called a gin removes these fibers.

People have used these plants for a long time. In the past, paper was made from old rags. These rags came from plants like hemp and linen. A man named Justus Claproth lived in Germany. In 1774, he found a way to remove ink. This is called deinking. Later, in 1843, people began using wood pulp. This meant they did not need ragpickers as much.

Many different plants provide these useful fibers. Bast fibers include flax for linen and jute. Jute is very cheap after cotton. Some plants like Abacá come from bananas. They make a rope called "manila" rope. Other fibers come from leaves, like Piña from pineapple. You can also find fibers in seeds. Cotton is a seed fiber. Coconut husks provide a fiber called coir.

Fiber crops are different from trees. Trees take many years to grow. Most fiber crops grow in just one season. This makes them fast to harvest. They can be cheaper than wood pulp. They can also be better for the earth. However, they are only ready once a year. This means people must store them carefully. They must stop the crops from rotting. This is a big job for large mills.
