It comes from the fibers of the flax plant. This material is very good at soaking up water. It also dries much faster than cotton does. Because of this, it is very comfortable to wear in hot weather. People often use it to make clothes, bed sheets, and towels.

Even though it wrinkles easily, people still value it for its durability.

Making linen is a careful and slow process.

First, workers must harvest the flax plants. This takes much longer than harvesting cotton. The fibers are then turned into yarn. You can weave this yarn into cloth or even knit it. It can be hard to weave because the threads are not elastic. If you pull too hard, the threads might break. This makes making linen a difficult job.

Linen has a very long and amazing history.

Some dyed flax fibers were found in a cave in Georgia. These fibers might be over 30,000 years old! In ancient Egypt, linen was used for many important things. People wore white linen to stay cool in the heat. They also used it to wrap mummies as a symbol of light. In ancient Mesopotamia, wealthy people and priests used linen too.

Many places became famous for making this cloth.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the linen industry was very important for Europe. In the late 1800s, Russia was a huge producer of flax. At one time, Russia produced about 80% of the world's flax crop.

Today, you can find linen in many parts of your life.
