Towel

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A towel is a very useful object made of cloth or paper. Its main job is to soak up moisture through direct contact. You might use one to dry your body after a warm bath. You could also use one to wipe a wet table. People use many different materials to make them. Most bath and hand towels are made from cotton or linen. Some are made from bamboo or synthetic microfibers.

There are many special types of towels for different tasks. A bath towel is a large rectangle used for drying your body. A bath sheet is even larger, sometimes measuring 100 by 150 cm. Beach towels are big and colorful so you can lay on them. They help wipe sand off your skin at the beach. Hand towels are much smaller, often only about 30 cm wide. In the kitchen, people use tea towels made of lint-free linen. These help dry dishes or keep a teapot warm.

Towels have a very long and interesting history. Studies of the Middle Ages show people kept towels as personal items. Many people link the invention of the towel to Bursa, Turkey. In the 17th century, Turkish weavers made flat towels called peshtemal. These were made of cotton or linen and often had hand embroidery. They were very absorbent and stayed light even when they were wet. As the Ottoman Empire grew, these towels became more popular.

Over time, the way towels look has changed quite a bit. By the 18th century, towels began to have small loops. These loops are called terrycloth, and the Turkish word for towel is havlu. This word actually means "with loops." In the 19th century, towels became much cheaper to buy. This happened because of the cotton trade and new machines. Now, factories can make terrycloth by the yard for shops. This means almost everyone can afford to have them at home.

Today, you can find a towel for almost any activity. Swimmers often use sports towels made of microfiber or viscose. These towels are very good at soaking up water quickly. You can even find a tenugui, which is a Japanese hand towel. It can be used as a headband or to wrap gifts. Some towels are even made for babies and have a hood. This hood helps keep a little baby's head warm and dry.
