People use them for many different jobs. Some wipes are for personal hygiene to keep skin clean. Other wipes are for household cleaning or even medical work. It is important to know that medical wipes are not meant for your skin.

Most wipes are made in a specific way. About ninety percent of wipes use nonwoven fabrics. These fabrics are made from polyester or polypropylene. To make them useful, companies soak the material in liquids. They might use water or isopropyl alcohol. Some wipes also have extra things added to them. They might have lotions to make them soft. They might have perfume to make them smell nice. Companies also add preservatives to stop germs from growing in the package.

An American man named Arthur Julius is the inventor of the wet wipe. He worked in the cosmetics industry. In 1957, he changed a machine used for soap. He kept this machine in a loft in Manhattan. In 1958, he trademarked the name Wet-Nap. He worked with a mechanic to make the product better. He showed his invention at the 1960 National Restaurant Show in Chicago. In 1963, he sold Wet-Nap products to Colonel Harland Sanders. These were given to customers at Kentucky Fried Chicken.

There are many special types of wipes for different needs. Baby wipes are made for the sensitive skin of infants. They can have gentle ingredients or alcohol-based cleaners. Some packs have 80 or more sheets. In 1990, brands like Huggies and Pampers appeared on the market. There are also wipes for pets like dogs and cats. These can clean eyes, ears, or teeth. Some wipes are even used for pain relief on small burns. They might contain benzocaine to help with itching.

Some people use wipes as a way to clean up while traveling. For example, people at music festivals use them instead of showers. However, using wipes in the toilet can cause big problems. Many brands say their wipes are "flushable." This means they claim you can wash them away. But many wipes do not break apart in water. They can clog pipes and septic tanks. They can even join with fat to make huge blocks called fatbergs.

Because of this, water companies ask people not to flush them.
