A diaper is a special kind of underwear.

It helps people stay clean by absorbing or containing waste. This prevents waste from getting on outer clothes or the ground. Most babies and toddlers wear them while they learn to use a toilet. Some children also use them if they wet the bed at night. Adults may use them too if they have certain health conditions. Even astronauts wear them while they work in space!

There are two main ways diapers work. Some are made of cloth using materials like cotton, hemp, or bamboo.

These can be washed and used many times. Other diapers are disposable, which means you throw them away after one use. These contain absorbent chemicals to soak up liquid. Modern disposable diapers use many layers to stay effective. They have an outer shell to stop wetness from leaking out. Inside, they have a soft layer near the skin. A middle layer uses a material called sodium polyacrylate to lock in wetness.

The word "diaper" has a long history. In the 1590s in England, it described a pattern of shapes on fabric.

Later, the word came to mean the cloth itself. In the United States and Canada, people call them diapers. In the United Kingdom, people often use the word "nappy." Many think "nappy" is a smaller version of the word "napkin." In the 1800s, mothers used cotton held by safety pins. In 1887, a woman named Maria Allen mass-produced cloth diapers in the United States.

New ideas changed how diapers were made in the 20th century. In 1946, Marion Donovan made a waterproof cover called a "Boater."

She used nylon parachute cloth to keep things dry. In 1947, Valerie Hunter Gordon developed "Paddi," a two-part system. She made many of these by hand at her kitchen table. In 1959, Victor Mills helped create the brand "Pampers." This brand did not hit stores until 1961. Later, companies like Procter & Gamble and Kimberly Clark competed to make better designs. This competition helped make diapers cheaper and better for everyone.

Today, diapers use amazing science to stay comfortable. Some have "double gussets," which are extra folds of fabric.

These folds help the diaper fit snugly around a baby's legs. This prevents leaks and keeps the fit comfortable. Many diapers now have colorful designs with animals or movie characters. They even have "wetness indicators." This is a special ink that changes color when the diaper is wet. This helps caregivers know exactly when it is time for a change.
