A nanny is a person who provides care for children. Most of the time, this work happens inside a family home.

Nannies are different from other child care workers. A childminder runs a small business out of their own home. In the United Kingdom, childminders must follow specific rules and have special training. Some families even use an agency to find the perfect nanny. These workers play a very important role in how a child grows and learns.

There are many different ways a nanny might work today. A live-in nanny stays at the family home. They might do things like wash clothes or tidy up rooms. They also prepare meals and help with school work. Some nannies only work at night to help new babies sleep. These night nannies are often seen as experts in their field. Other families use a nanny share. This is when two families pay one nanny to care for all their children together.

Nannies have a long history in many parts of the world. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, they often worked for wealthy families.

Some were called nurses or wet nurses. In India, a nanny was known as an ayah. In the Dutch East Indies, they were called a baboe. In China, the term was amah. Nannies in colonial times often lived with families for their whole lives. They even traveled with families when they moved to new countries.

Specialized nannies help mothers care for newborns. In China, there is a tradition called zuo yue zi. This is a time for the mother to rest and recover. Helpers called yue sao provide special knowledge during this month. In Singapore and Malaysia, these workers are called confinement nannies. In the Netherlands, a worker called a kraamverzorgster helps the family. She can clean the home and check on the baby's health. These experts help the whole family during a big change.

Many people have become famous as nannies throughout history. Some nannies worked for the British royal family. For example, Clara Knight was a nanny for Queen Elizabeth II. Elizabeth Ann Everest was a nanny for Winston Churchill. Even some people on television have become well known. Jo Frost is a famous nanny from the show Supernanny. Most nannies are women between the ages of 20 and 60. However, some men work as nannies too. People sometimes call a male nanny a "manny."
