While some people teach informally, like showing a coworker a task, most formal teachers are paid professionals. They work in places like schools or colleges to help students learn. Some families choose to teach their own children at home, which is called homeschooling. Other people, like pastors or youth workers, also spend much of their time teaching.

A teacher's work often goes beyond the classroom. They might lead field trips or supervise study halls and school clubs. They also have a legal duty to keep students safe from harm. This includes protecting them from things like bullying or racism. In some places, teachers are also responsible for student discipline.

Teaching is a very complex activity that changes depending on where you live. Different cultures have different ideas about what a teacher should be. Some see a teacher as a manager of lessons or a caring person. Others see them as an expert learner or a leader in their community.

When teachers use gestures or facial expressions, students often feel more motivated. This energy can spread from the teacher to the students. This is sometimes called emotional contagion. Research shows that students often like teachers who are friendly and supportive. These teachers help students connect their own personal goals with their school work. This can lead to more success and better self-confidence.

To become a professional teacher, most people must earn special qualifications. This usually involves studying at a university or a college. They often study pedagogy, which is the science of how teaching works.

Even after they start their jobs, many teachers continue to learn new things. This is called continuing professional development. In some societies, teachers have a very high status, similar to doctors or lawyers. In the twentieth century, many intelligent women chose teaching as a career. Today, as more women enter other jobs, it can be harder to find new teachers.
