Teacher

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A teacher, also known as a schoolteacher or an educator, is a person who facilitates the acquisition of knowledge, competence, or virtue. This process is achieved through the practice of teaching. While teaching can occur informally, such as a colleague demonstrating a specific task to another, the term often refers to professional educators. Most formal teaching is conducted by paid professionals within structured environments like schools or colleges.

The duties of a teacher are diverse and vary significantly across different cultures. They may provide instruction in literacy, numeracy, or various arts. Some focus on vocational training, which teaches specific crafts or job skills. Other teachers instruct in religion, civics, or essential life skills. Formal tasks include preparing lessons based on an agreed curriculum. They must also deliver these lessons and assess the progress of their pupils.

Beyond the classroom, a teacher's professional responsibilities often expand. They may accompany students on educational field trips or supervise study halls. Many also help organize school functions or act as supervisors for extracurricular activities. Crucially, teachers have a legal duty to protect students from harm. This includes preventing issues like bullying, racism, or abuse. In certain education systems, teachers are also tasked with maintaining student discipline.

Teaching is recognized as a highly complex social practice. Because it occurs within specific contexts of time, place, and culture, it is shaped by local values. Experts often categorize teacher competences into four distinct models. These include the teacher as a manager of instruction, a caring person, an expert learner, or a cultural and civic person. The European Union identifies three specific areas of competence: working with others, working with knowledge and technology, and working within society.

Scholarly consensus suggests that teacher requirements can be grouped into three headings. The first is knowledge, which includes subject matter and educational sciences like psychology. The second is craft skills, such as lesson planning and managing student groups. The third is dispositions, which refers to the essential values, beliefs, and attitudes a teacher holds.

To maintain these skills, many professionals engage in continuing professional development throughout their careers.

One significant factor in effective teaching is enthusiasm. Research indicates that teachers who show excitement toward course materials create positive learning experiences. Enthusiastic teachers often use nonverbal expressions, such as varied gestures and emotional facial expressions. This can lead to a phenomenon called emotional contagion, where students catch the energy of the teacher. This energy can increase a student's intrinsic motivation, which is their internal drive to learn.

Effective teaching also relies heavily on the quality of student-teacher relationships. Students tend to build stronger connections with teachers who are friendly and supportive. Useful interactions help students align their personal goals with their academic goals. This alignment can result in stronger self-confidence and greater success in both areas. Effective teachers often invite student participation and even allow humor into the classroom to foster a better environment.

Finally, the profession of teaching is influenced by social and economic factors. In many countries, teachers must obtain professional credentials from a university, often studying pedagogy, the science of teaching. The social status of teachers varies globally; in some places, they are viewed similarly to lawyers or engineers. In the twentieth century, many intelligent women entered teaching because other corporate roles were unavailable. As more women enter various professional fields today, attracting new qualified teachers may become more challenging.
