Homework

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Homework is a set of tasks that teachers assign to students. These tasks are meant to be finished at home. Students might do many different things for their homework. They could read a book or write a paper. They might solve math problems or practice new skills.

Some homework is used to get ready for a future lesson. It can also help students learn how to manage their time. Teachers use it to help students practice what they learned in class.

How homework affects students can be a big debate. For young children, homework does not usually improve grades. Some people think it helps kids learn good study habits. However, there is no research to prove this is true. For teenagers, homework can help them get higher grades and test scores.

But too much work can cause grades to drop. Middle schoolers may score worse if they do over 90 minutes of homework. High schoolers may score worse if they do more than two hours a day.

Sometimes, homework can feel like "busy work." This is work that does not help a student learn much. For example, a student once had to color a mole for chemistry class. This task did not help them learn science, but it lowered their grade.

Other tasks, like lab reports, take a long time but are very important. These help students learn through deep practice. Some teachers now use online homework. This can give students quick feedback and let them try again if they are wrong.

Homework can also change how students feel and live. Many studies show that homework is a big source of stress. A study found that 89% of American students felt stressed by it.

This stress can lead to less sleep for students. It can also cause arguments at home with parents. Homework takes away time that could be used for family or play. Some students even feel less excited about school because of it.

People have been studying homework for a long time. Research on this topic goes back to the early 1900s.

In the past, homework could even cause students to fail school. Long ago, if a student could not finish their work, they might drop out. Today, we see how much time students spend on it. In 2003, American teenagers spent about 50 minutes on homework each weekday. By 2017, that average grew to about one hour a day.
