A domestic worker is a person who works inside a home.

They perform many different kinds of household services for an individual or a family. Some workers focus on cleaning, cooking, laundry, or ironing. Other workers provide important care for children or elderly people. Some workers also run errands for the household. Many of these workers are "live-in" domestics. This means they live in the home where they work.

They might sleep in small rooms like an attic or a basement. In some cases, they might even sleep in the kitchen.

This type of work has changed a lot over many years. In the past, people often used the word "servant."

In Britain, there was a very organized system for domestic service. This system was very complex during the Edwardian period before World War I. Long ago, workers often had an apprentice system. This allowed them to move up through different ranks. They might receive meals, clothes, and a place to stay. However, these workers often had very few legal protections.

Even early laws, like one in the United Kingdom in 1823, often favored the employers.

Today, domestic work is a huge global industry.

The International Labour Organization estimated there were 67.1 million domestic workers in 2015. Some experts believe the real number could be as high as 100 million. This is because much of this work is hidden or not registered. Most domestic workers are women, making up about 83% of the workforce. Many of these people are also migrant workers. In the United States, there are about 1.8 million domestic workers. Many of these workers come from minority groups and earn low wages.

Working in a private home can be very difficult.

Because the work happens inside a house, it is often out of the public spotlight. This can make it hard for workers to get help when they face unfair treatment. In the United States, many domestic workers do not get the same legal protections as other workers. For example, only 13% of them have health insurance from their employers. Nearly half of these workers earn less than what is needed to support a family. In some places, like Guatemala, workers may not have set work schedules. In Brazil, workers must have a registered contract to ensure they get fair rights.

People are working hard to make things better for domestic workers.

Many groups have formed to protect their rights. In the United States, groups like the National Domestic Workers Alliance help workers. They have helped pass a Bill of Rights in states like New York and California. In 2011, the International Labour Organization adopted a new convention. This convention says domestic workers should have the same rights as all other workers. Uruguay was the first country to sign this agreement in 2012. These changes help ensure that domestic work is respected and fair.
