A sweatshop is a workplace with very poor conditions.

These places are often cramped and lack enough space. Workers might face very little light or fresh air. The temperature can be too hot or too cold. Many people in these shops are paid very little money. They might work long hours without getting any breaks. Some shops even break laws about minimum wage or child labor. Because of these hard conditions, they are called sweatshops.

In these factories, the work can be very difficult.

Many workers, especially women, face unfair treatment from bosses. Some employers might force women to take pregnancy tests. This is done to avoid paying for health benefits. In some cases, workers are even tricked into working. This is called human trafficking, and it is a serious problem. Some workers feel so much stress that they become very unhappy. In some places, factories even use nets to keep workers safe from harm.

This way of working has a long history.

The term was used in a book in 1850. It described a system where a middleman called a "sweater" gave out work. Between 1830 and 1850, many people moved to big cities for these jobs. They moved to places like London and New York City. Many worked in tiny rooms that had rats or were prone to fires. These rooms were often located in crowded tenement buildings.

People have worked hard to change these rules.

In the 1890s, groups fought for a minimum wage. In 1910, a union for garment workers was started. A very sad fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in 1911 changed how people felt. Journalists also wrote stories to show how bad the shops were. In 1994, the U.S. government found thousands of sweatshops still existed. They defined them as places that break labor laws.

Today, sweatshops are still a big issue in the world.

Many famous fashion brands have been criticized for using them. Brands like Nike, H&M, and Adidas have faced protests. Some people believe "fast fashion" helps sweatshops grow. Fast fashion means making new clothes very quickly to follow trends. This can lead to lower costs and harder work for others. Many groups still march to demand fair pay and safety for all.
