Slavery is a system where one person is owned by another.

This means a person is treated like property rather than a human being. They are forced to work and must live where their owner decides.

This is often called chattel slavery. In this system, people can be bought and sold just like objects. This practice has happened in many different parts of the world throughout history.

There are different ways people became enslaved. Some were captured during wars or after a military defeat. Others became enslaved because they owed money and could not pay it back. Some people were forced into it because of their race or sex.

In some cases, people even entered slavery voluntarily to escape poverty. Most people, however, were forced into it against their will.

History shows that slavery was common in many ancient civilizations. It was a major part of life in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.

It also happened in Medieval Egypt and across Sub-Saharan Africa. In the Americas, it was practiced in places like Brazil and the Caribbean. The Iroquois people had a different system. They took captives to help them join their culture. For the Iroquois, children of those in bondage eventually became part of the society.

Many brave people worked to end slavery through abolitionist movements.

These movements grew in Europe and the Americas during the 18th century. They argued that all people should be free. In the United States, slavery ended in 1865 after the Civil War. France abolished it in 1794, though it was briefly brought back by Napoleon. Brazil was the last country in the Americas to end it in 1888. In the Arabian Peninsula, legal chattel slavery ended in the 1960s and 1970s. The last country to abolish it was Mauritania in 1981.

Today, slavery is illegal in every country in the world.

However, a version called modern slavery still exists in secret. In 2019, about 40 million people were still living in enslaved conditions. This includes forced labor in factories and sweatshops. It also includes human trafficking and child soldiers. Some people are also trapped by debt bondage. This is a very serious issue that people are still working to solve.
