Babysitting is the act of caring for a child for a short time.

It is a job that people of all ages can do. Many teenagers in North America use it to earn extra money. It also gives them experience in looking after young children. For the children, it is a chance to be away from their parents for a bit.

Babysitters have many different tasks to complete. They might keep a sleeping child safe or change diapers. They can play games or prepare meals for the family. Some even teach children how to read or drive.

In many places, people take special classes to learn these skills. These programs often teach child safety and first aid. Local schools and hospitals sometimes provide this training. It is helpful for sitters to know how toddlers grow and change. This helps them plan the right activities for different ages. Some sitters are high school or college students. Other adults work from home as professional childcare providers. To keep children safe, some employers check a sitter's criminal record first.

Babysitting became a popular activity for teens in the 1920s. During the 1930s, the Great Depression made it even more common. Many families had very little money during that hard time. Teenage girls often worked as "mother's helpers" or "neighborhood helpers." Some boys also worked as "child tenders" to earn money. This was a name used before the word "babysitter" became common. In the 1940s, the need for sitters grew during World War II. Many mothers had to work, and the number of babies was rising.

History shows that the job has changed over many years. In the 1950s and 1960s, babysitting grew in the American suburbs. This happened because many new families moved to these large areas. In those suburbs, many people did not have extra family nearby to help.

Before the Civil War, enslaved Black women cared for children. After 1863, many African American women worked in domestic jobs. By the end of the 20th century, views on the job shifted again. A book called "The Bad Baby-Sitters Handbook" came out in 1991. It showed that many teens had different feelings about the work.

Babysitting can be a very rewarding job for many people. Many sitters have positive experiences with kind and helpful parents. Some even view their work as a professional career. However, the job can also be quite difficult at times. Sitters sometimes deal with children who do not want to sleep. They might have to manage fights between siblings or loud crying. Some sitters also struggle with low pay or unfair rules. Even with these hard parts, it remains a very important way to care for our communities.
