Many teens do this to earn money. It also helps them learn how to care for others. In the 1920s, it became a common job for young people. Later, in the 1950s and 1960s, it grew even more. This was because many new families moved to the suburbs.

During the Great Depression in the 1930s, many teens needed jobs. Some girls became "mother's helpers" to help at home. Some boys also worked as "child tenders." This was a name used before the word "babysitter." During World War II, the need for sitters went up. Many mothers had to work during the war. Some girls even took classes to learn how to be safe.

Babysitters do many tasks. They might change diapers or make meals. They also play games or teach kids to read. Today, some sitters take special classes. These classes teach them first aid. This helps them keep babies and toddlers safe.
