Thread is a long strand of material used to make things. People use it to join pieces of cloth together or to decorate them.

You might use it for sewing, embroidery, or even making lace. Thread is similar to yarn, cord, or string. However, thread is usually fine and smooth for delicate work. Yarn is often thicker and used for knitting. Cords and strings are usually stronger for tying things. Choosing the right thread helps make sure your work lasts a long time.

There are many different ways to make thread.

You can find thread made from cotton, wool, or silk. Some thread is made from flax or linen. People also use man-made materials like nylon and polyester. Even metal threads made of fine wire exist for decoration.

It is important to match the thread to the job. If you sew a shirt, use a light thread. If the thread is too strong, it might rip the fabric. Heavy goods like tents or car seats need very strong thread. Some special threads can even handle extreme heat up to 800 °C.

People have been making thread for a very long time.

Ancient Egyptians were known for creating their own thread. They used plant fibers, wool, and even hair to make it. Over many years, people found new ways to spin materials. Today, we use many different tools to make thread very quickly. We can make thread that is very soft or very tough. This long history shows how much people value making things by hand.

Measuring thread can be a bit tricky because there are different systems. One common way is called weight, or "wt." In the American standard, a higher weight number means the thread is thinner.

There is also a system from Japan called the Gunze Count. This uses two numbers to show the weight and how many strands are used. Another way to measure is called denier, which is used for embroidery. With denier, a larger number actually means a thicker thread. There is also a system called "tex" used in North America and Europe.

Thread is often made of more than one strand. These individual strands are called "plies."

When you look at a label, it might show how many plies are in the thread. For example, a label might say "50/3." This means it has three strands of 50 weight thread. You can find thread that is easy to use for many tasks. Some thread can even dissolve in water when you wash it. This helps people do temporary sewing before they make the final version.
