Writing on a scroll can be tricky. The ink might flake off the surface. Because of this, people made special inks.

Making and using a scroll takes careful work.
Scrolls have a very long history.
Eventually, a new way of making books became popular. This is called a codex. A codex is a book with separate pages bound together.
Codices were much easier to use than scrolls. You can read on both sides of a page in a codex. It is also easier to find a specific part of the text. Scrolls are hard to use if you want to see the beginning and the end at once. Codices also fit nicely on library shelves. The spine of the book shows the title so you can find it easily. Today, we use amazing technology to study old, damaged scrolls. We use 3D X-ray scans to see the writing inside. This is called virtual unrolling, and it lets us read scrolls without breaking them.
A scroll is a continuous roll of writing material used to store information.

Using a scroll requires specific technical care to prevent damage. Because the material is constantly being rolled and unrolled, it undergoes physical stress. This repeated bending can cause the surface to weaken.
There are different types of rolls used throughout history.
Scrolls represent one of the earliest forms of editable record keeping.
Around the 1st century AD, a new format called the codex began to appear. The codex is a book made by folding material into pages.
The transition from scrolls to codices happened for many practical reasons. A scroll is awkward if a reader needs to compare information from opposite ends of the document. Furthermore, scrolls are usually written on only one side. A codex allows a person to use both sides of every page. Eventually, the folds were cut into individual sheets called leaves. These leaves were then bound together along one edge and protected by stiff covers. These covers were often made of wood and enclosed in leather. The codex was much easier to organize on library shelves because the spine could face out with a title. This made finding specific books much faster than searching through piles of scrolls.
By the fourth century, the codex became the standard format for books. As the codex grew in popularity, the use of scrolls declined. Most ancient scrolls were not preserved through careful copying into the new format. Instead, archaeologists often find them in burial pits or within the buried trash of ancient communities. Today, modern technology allows us to study these fragile remains through virtual unrolling.
