People read a scroll by unrolling it. This shows one page at a time. The rest of the roll stays tucked to the sides. Writers use lines of text from top to bottom. Some people write from left to right. Others write from right to left.

Writing on a scroll can be tricky. The ink might flake off the surface. Because of this, people made special inks.

In the past, scrolls were very important. They were the first way to keep records. Later, a new way of making books arrived. This is called a codex. A codex is a book with pages. People found the codex easier to use. You can read both sides of a page. They also fit well on library shelves. Today, we use new tools to see old scrolls. We use X-rays to look inside damaged rolls. This helps us read them without breaking them.
