Illuminated manuscript

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Long ago, people made special books by hand. These books are called illuminated manuscripts. The word illuminated means to light up. Artists made these books look bright. They used bright colors on the pages. They also used real gold. This gold makes the pages shine in the light.

Making these books was a slow job. It took a lot of skill. First, a person wrote the words. Then, an artist added the art. They drew pictures and patterns. These books were not made by a machine. Each book was unique. No two books were exactly the same.

These books were very special. They were often made for religious use. People worked hard to make them beautiful. The art shows great care. Today, we look at them to see old ways of making things. They show us how people used art to honor their beliefs. They are still beautiful to see today.
