Players study three main phases. They study the opening at the start. They study the middlegame in the middle. They study the endgame at the very end. People who study these parts are called chess theorists. They write many books to share what they know.

There is a huge amount of chess writing. In 1913, a man named H. J. R. Murray wrote a very big book. He said chess books might be more than all other games combined! In 1949, a man named B. H. Wood said there were 20,000 books. Today, the John G. White Collection has over 32,000 books.

One very old book was made in 1497. It was by Luis Ramirez de Lucena. It studied eleven different ways to start a game. Another famous writer was Pedro Damiano. His book was a big hit in the 1500s. Many players still use his name today. Modern players also use computers to learn new ways to play.
