Knight (chess)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The knight is a special piece in the game of chess. It has a very unique way of moving. It moves in the shape of a capital L. It can move two squares one way and one square sideways. The knight is the only piece that can jump over others. This helps it move past a blockade of pieces.

Each player starts with two knights. They sit between a rook and a bishop. A knight can have up to eight moves at once. It is strongest in the middle of the board. It is weakest when it sits in a corner. Every time a knight moves, it changes to a new color square.

Knights are worth about three pawns. They are often as strong as bishops. A knight can control squares of any color. This is a big help in the end of a game. Some people call the knight a horse. In other lands, people call it a jumper. The knight has a very old way of moving. It first appeared in a game called chaturanga long ago.
