In a standard set, the king is the tallest piece. It often has a cross on top. This helps you find it quickly.

A king moves one square at a time. It can move up, down, or sideways. It can also move diagonally. If an enemy piece attacks the king, it is in "check." You must move the king to safety right away. You can move the king to a new square. You can also block the attack with another piece. If you cannot escape, it is "checkmate." Then, the game is over and you lose.

There is a special move called "castling." This lets the king move two squares toward a rook. It helps keep the king safe.
