Horseshoes is a fun game played on a lawn or in a sandbox.

Two people or two teams play against each other. Each player tosses metal or plastic shoes at a stake. The stakes are set in the ground. Players take turns throwing their shoes one at a time. One round of throws is called an inning.

To win, you must score points. A ringer is a great throw. It happens when a shoe lands around the stake. A ringer is worth three points. You can also score points by landing close to the stake. If your shoe is closer than your opponent's, you get a point. If both your shoes are closer, you get two points.

Some people play for 15 or 21 points. Big tournaments may go up to 50 points. The game has a long history. Long ago, the shoes were much rounder. In 1946, a champion showed his skills at the White House. Later, President George H.W. Bush built a pit there too. He loved to play the game with his guests.
