You use a racquet to hit a hollow rubber ball. You can play alone or with a partner. When you play with a partner, it is called doubles.

Most racquet sports use a net. Racquetball does not have a net. You play in a room with four walls. You can even hit the ball off the ceiling! The ball must hit the front wall before it touches the floor. The goal is to hit it so the other player cannot hit it back.

A standard court is 40 feet long. It is 20 feet wide and 20 feet high. The walls and floor are all part of the game.

Joseph Sobek invented the modern game in 1950. He wanted a sport that was fast and easy to learn. He added strings to a paddle to give players more control. Today, millions of people play this fun game. Many players wear eyeguards to stay safe. They also wear special shoes to help them move quickly.
