Pickleball is a fast and fun racket sport.

You use a smooth paddle to hit a plastic ball. The ball is hollow and has holes in it. This makes it bounce less than a tennis ball. You can play with two or four people. You can play on a court inside or outside.

Players hit the ball over a net. There is a special area called the non-volley zone. Many people call this area the "kitchen." You cannot hit the ball while standing in the kitchen unless it bounces first. You must also serve the ball with an underhand stroke. Some players use soft shots called dinks to stay safe. Others use a strong drive or a smash to score.

People invented this game in 1965 on Bainbridge Island. Three friends named Joel Pritchard, Barney McCallum, and Bill Bell made the rules. They used leftover gear from other sports. It became the official state sport of Washington in 2022. Today, millions of people play it. It is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States.
