Knight (chess)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The knight is a very special piece in the game of chess. It has a unique way of moving that no other piece has. A knight moves in the shape of a capital L. It can go two squares up and one square sideways. It can also go two squares sideways and one square up. This movement allows the knight to jump over other pieces on the board.

This jumping ability is very helpful when other pieces block the path. Every time a knight moves, it lands on a square of a different color. If it starts on a light square, it will land on a dark square next.

Each player begins a game with two knights on their side. You can find them on the b- and g- files. They sit right between a rook and a bishop. A knight can have up to eight different moves at one time. It is most powerful when it stays in the center of the board. In the middle, it has the most room to move around. However, a knight is weakest when it is stuck in a corner. In a corner, it can only make two possible moves.

The knight has a very long and interesting history. It has the oldest defined movement of any piece in chess. This piece was first used in an Indian game called chaturanga. This game was played around the 6th century. Since that time, the way the knight moves has not changed at all.

People in different lands have many different names for this piece. Some people call it a "horse" in many languages. In others, it is called a "jumper" because it can leap over pieces.

In the game, a knight is worth about three pawns. This makes it about as strong as a bishop. A knight can be very good at the end of a game. It can control squares of any color on the board. A bishop can only move on squares of one color. Sometimes, two knights can work together to stop a queen. This is called forming a drawing fortress.

However, two bishops are usually considered a better pair than two knights.

Math experts also find the knight very interesting to study. They look at a puzzle called the knight's tour. This is a problem where a knight must visit every single square on the board. The knight must visit each square exactly one time.

In modern chess, we use the letter N to write down knight moves. This is part of a system called algebraic notation. We use N because the letter K is already used for the king. This helps players keep track of the game clearly.
