Single bond

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Atoms like to join together to make molecules. They do this using a single bond. A single bond is a type of covalent bond. This happens when two atoms share one pair of electrons.

These electrons do not belong to just one atom anymore. Instead, they spend time in the orbitals of both atoms. This sharing holds the atoms together. It is a very important part of how matter works.

Most single bonds are a type called a sigma bond. This is the basic way atoms connect. A double bond uses one sigma bond and one pi bond. A triple bond uses one sigma bond and two pi bonds.

Because single bonds only have one part, they are the weakest. They are also the longest type of bond. This is because there is less attraction between the atoms. More shared electrons in other bonds pull atoms closer together.

Scientists use special drawings called Lewis structures to show bonds. You might see dots used to represent the electrons. You might also see a simple bar between the atoms.

The bar represents both electrons in the single bond at once. These drawings help us see how atoms are arranged. They make the invisible world of molecules easier to study. This is a common way to map out chemistry.

Single bonds have a special ability to rotate. The atoms can spin around the sigma bond like an axis. Double and triple bonds cannot do this. This is because the pi bonds in them stop the rotation.

At a temperature of 298 K, these other bonds stay held in place. This makes single bonds quite flexible. It is a unique trait compared to other covalent bonds.

We see single bonds in many different things. They are in diatomic molecules like H2, F2, and HCl. They are also in water, which is H2O. Methane, or CH4, uses four single bonds.

You can even find them in large hydrocarbons. These are called alkanes if they only have single bonds. Names like ethane, 2-methylbutane, and cyclopentane end in -ane. This shows they belong to that group.
