Lewis structure

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A Lewis structure is a special kind of map for atoms. These diagrams show how atoms stick together to form a molecule. They also show lone pairs, which are electrons that do not join a bond.

Scientists call these maps Lewis dot formulas or electron dot structures. They are very helpful for seeing how molecules are built. These drawings help us understand how different parts of a molecule act.

Building a Lewis structure follows a specific set of steps. First, you count the total valence electrons for all the atoms. Valence electrons are the ones used for bonding.

Next, you draw a single line between each pair of connected atoms. Each line represents a bond made of two shared electrons. After that, you place the remaining electrons as dots around the atoms. Most atoms try to reach an octet, which means having eight electrons. Hydrogen is the exception and follows the duplet rule by needing only two.

Gilbert N. Lewis introduced these structures in 1916. He shared his ideas in an article called "The Atom and the Molecule."

Even though people knew less about atoms then, his method was very smart. It captured many important features of how molecules work. Today, chemists and teachers still use his method all the time. It remains a key tool for studying how chemicals react with each other.

There are many specific rules to keep the structure accurate. For a neutral molecule, the total electrons must match the sum of the atoms' valence electrons. If you are drawing an ion, you must use brackets and a charge. A negative ion gets extra electrons, while a positive ion has fewer.

You can also use a method called formal charge to check your work. This helps you see if the electronic charge on an atom is correct. It helps scientists choose the best way to draw a molecule.

Sometimes, one single drawing is not enough to show the truth. This happens during resonance, where a molecule can look like different structures.

Instead of switching back and forth, the molecule acts like an average of all the forms. You can show this by drawing two-way arrows between the different structures. You might also see simpler versions called skeletal formulas. These leave out some details to make the drawing easier to read. They are very common when looking at organic molecules.
