Computers can play chess. They use special software to make moves.

These machines work in a very smart way. They build large trees of moves. A tree is a map of many possible paths. The computer looks at thousands or millions of nodes. A node is a single possible move. Modern computers are very fast. They can check many nodes every second. This helps them find the best move to make.

In the 1950s, early programs were not very good. A beginner could beat them easily. By 1997, a supercomputer named Deep Blue won a match against the world champion, Garry Kasparov.

Today, you do not need a giant machine. You can play on a phone or a PC. Some programs use neural networks. These are smart systems that help the computer learn.

Many people use these tools to learn. They use them to study old games. Some programs even let you pick a weaker level. This makes it fair for humans to play. You can practice even when no one is there to play with you.
