It turns a stack of paper sheets into a finished object. This work requires measuring, cutting, and gluing. A bookbinder must solve three main problems. First, they must join paper sheets into a solid block. Second, they must create a cover to protect those pages. Third, they must label and decorate the cover so people know the title.

Some books are made for printing stories. Other books are left blank for writing. These are called stationery bindings. You might use them as a diary or a sketchbook.

To make a book, a binder follows several steps. They start by joining groups of pages together. This is often done using thread or strong adhesive. Other ways include using plastic coils or metal rings. Once the pages are joined, they need a protective cover. This cover can be a simple sheet of paper. It can also be thick boards covered in cloth or leather.

The binder then adds decorations or labels to the outside. This helps protect the contents and makes the book look beautiful.

Long ago, people did not use books like we do today. In the Hellenistic-Roman culture, writers used scrolls. A scroll is a long roll of material. To read a scroll, you must unroll it. This can be hard if you want to find a specific part. Around the 1st century AD, the Roman Empire began using the codex. The word codex comes from a Latin word meaning "the trunk" of a tree.

These early books were much easier to handle than scrolls. By the 6th century, the codex replaced scrolls in the Western world.

History shows how bookmaking changed over time. In the 15th century, new ways to decorate leather were brought from the Islamic world. This included gold tooling, which is a way of pressing designs into covers.

During the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution changed everything. Machines were introduced to make books much faster. This happened alongside new ways to make paper and tan leather. Today, many books are made in large factories using automated processes.

We can see the history of bookbinding in many objects. The St Cuthbert Gospel from about the year 700 is one of the oldest European examples. It is made of red goatskin with colorful designs.

Some very special books, called treasure bindings, were even decorated with gems and ivory. Even though we use machines now, bookbinding still uses many old skills. It combines papermaking, leather-working, and graphic design. Whether made by hand or by machine, every book is a special tool for sharing ideas.
