Artist's book

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An artist's book is a special kind of art. It uses the form of a book as its main tool. Some of these books are made in small batches. Other books are mass-produced so many people can own them. There is no single way to define an artist's book. They can be one-of-a-kind objects or many copies. These works are often interactive and easy to share.

They are also portable and easy to move around.

Artists use many different ways to build these works. Some look like a traditional codex with pages. Others use scrolls, fold-outs, or concertinas. You might even find loose items inside a box.

To make them, artists use many skills. They use hand binding, painting, and drawing. They might use digital printing or photography. Some even use paper engineering or machine production. They can even use found objects to create their art.

This art form has a very long history. Many people point to William Blake as a key figure. He lived from 1757 to 1827. He and his wife, Catherine, made very unique books. They wrote, illustrated, printed, and bound them by hand.

Their work mixed text and images in new ways. This set a tone for many artists who came later. It showed how to connect writing with art and form.

In the early 1900s, new groups changed everything. The Italian Futurists wanted to spread ideas quickly. Filippo Marinetti published a manifesto in 1909. This helped him tour Europe and start new movements. In Russia, the Futurists also made many bold books. They used materials like wallpaper and carbon copying.

Some books, like "Worldbackwards" from 1912, used collage. These artists wanted to challenge how books should look.

Later, artists began to break even more rules. Dieter Roth made books with holes in the pages. This let a reader see more than one page at once. He also used old newspapers and comic books. In the United States, Ed Ruscha made a famous book in 1963. It was called "Twentysix Gasoline Stations."

He made 400 copies at first, but later made thousands. His book showed gas stations along a long road trip.
