Mechanical screening is a way to sort materials by size.

This happens in many jobs. It helps in mining, food, and even recycling.

Machines use a screen to sort things. A screen is a cloth with many small holes. We call these holes a mesh.

When material moves over the mesh, small bits fall through. Large bits stay on top. This is called grading.

Machines use different motions to work. Some machines shake the whole frame. These are called circle-throw machines. They move big rocks and pebbles. Other machines only shake the screen cloth. We call these high frequency machines. They work on very tiny bits.

Gravity helps the small bits fall down. Vibration also helps the bits move. Sometimes, the holes get plugged with material. This is called blinding. A worker can use a brush to clear the holes. Screening can be done with water or it can be dry.
