A spiral separator is a tool that sorts things. It can sort bits by weight or by shape.

Some tools use water to work. This is a wet spiral separator. It works with a slurry. A slurry is a mix of water and solid bits. The tool has a tower. A long path called a sluice winds around it.

Heavy bits sink to the bottom of the sluice. They move slowly toward the center. Light bits stay on the outside with the water. They move quickly to the bottom. At the bottom, bars make a cut. This separates the heavy parts from the light parts.

These tools work best when bits have a similar size. They work well if the heavy bits are much denser than the light bits. Density is how heavy something is for its size. One type can process a few tons of ore every hour.

Other tools sort dry bits by shape. These are dry spiral separators. A round bit rolls very fast. It flies off the path into a funnel. Other shapes do not roll as fast. They stay on the path. This helps remove weed seeds from a harvest.
