Spiral separator

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A spiral separator is a specialized device used for sorting materials. It can sort particles based on their density or their shape. There are two main types of these machines. The first type is a wet spiral separator, also called a spiral concentrator. These work by using a liquid mixture to separate solids. The second type is a dry spiral separator. These machines sort particles by looking at how they are shaped. Both types are important in industrial processes like mining or farming.

Wet spiral separators work through a specific mechanical process. The device features a central tower with a winding path called a sluice. This sluice wraps around the tower in a spiral shape. A liquid mixture known as a slurry flows down this path. The separation happens because of density and hydrodynamic properties, such as drag. Drag is the resistance an object feels as it moves through a fluid. These forces act on the particles differently as they travel down the spiral.

In a wet separator, the particles move toward different areas based on weight. Heavier and larger particles sink to the bottom of the sluice quickly. These heavy particles experience more drag from the bottom surface. Because of this drag, they travel more slowly than lighter particles. As they slow down, they move toward the center of the spiral. In contrast, lighter particles stay near the outside edge of the spiral. These light particles move with the water and reach the bottom very quickly. At the very bottom, adjustable bars or slots make a "cut." This cut separates the high-density materials from the low-density materials.

To get the best results, engineers must manage several specific variables. Typical spiral concentrators use a slurry that is 20% to 40% solids by weight. The particles usually fall within a size range of 0.75 to 1.5mm. This size is also referred to as 17 to 340 mesh. The machine is less efficient when particles are very small, specifically between 0.1 and 0.074mm. For the separation to work well, the density difference between minerals must be at least 1 g/cm3. The machine also works best when all particles have a uniform size and shape.

There are many ways to improve the efficiency of these machines. Operators can change the rate at which they feed material into the device. They can also adjust the grain size or the slurry mass percentage. Some machines use washwater inlets along the spiral to help separate light minerals. Others use multiple outlets to remove heavy contaminants more effectively. Some designs even include ridges on the sluice at an angle to the flow. A single flight can process a couple of tons of ore every hour. To increase capacity, multiple flights can be stacked in the same space.

Dry spiral separators operate using a completely different mechanism. Instead of using density and water, they distinguish between round and non-round particles. This device also uses a tower, but it has an inwardly inclined flight wound around it. A catchment funnel is placed around this inner flight to collect specific items. Round particles roll at a much higher speed than other shapes. This speed causes them to be flung off the inner flight and into the funnel. Particles that are not round enough do not fly off. These irregular shapes are instead collected at the bottom of the flight.

These machines have many practical uses in the real world. Dry spiral separators are used to remove weed seeds from a planned harvest. They are also used to remove deformed lead shot from a supply. Wet separators are vital for purifying ore during mineral processing. By using these different methods, industries can precisely sort the materials they need. Whether by weight or by shape, the spiral separator is a key tool for separation processes.
