A cyclone is a tool used to clean air, gas, or liquids.

It works by spinning a flow in a fast circle. This spinning motion is called a vortex.

Inside a container called a cyclone, air flows in a spiral pattern. The air starts at the wide top and moves toward the narrow bottom.

Large or heavy particles cannot follow the tight curves of the spiral. Instead, they hit the outside walls. Gravity then pulls these particles to the bottom so they can be removed. In some designs, a second air flow is added. This helps push the dust toward the collection area. It also protects the walls from being worn down by the dust.

Many places use these tools. Sawmills use large cyclones to remove sawdust from the air. Oil refineries use them to separate oils and gases. You might even have one in your home. Bagless vacuum cleaners use cyclone technology to catch dirt.

Some very small cyclones can even be clipped to clothing. These help scientists study tiny particles in the air.
