A trommel screen is a machine that sorts materials.

The name comes from a German word for drum. It looks like a large, spinning drum. This drum has many small holes in it. These holes are called apertures.

How does it work? The drum is usually tilted at an angle. Material enters at one end. As the drum spins, the items move down the drum. Small items fall through the holes. Large items stay inside and roll out the end.

Inside the drum, there are different parts. Some drums have an internal screw. This screw helps items spiral through. Other drums use lifter bars. These bars lift and drop items to help them shake and sort.

People use these machines for many jobs. They sort city trash and food. They also help find valuable minerals in rocks. Even food companies use them to sort nuts and peas.

Trommels are very strong. They are also quieter than vibrating screens. However, they can sometimes get stuck. This happens if wet items clump together. We call this blinding.
