Abrasive

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An abrasive is a material used to shape or finish a workpiece. This happens through rubbing, which creates friction to wear parts of the material away.

Sometimes this process is used to make a surface smooth and reflective through polishing. Other times, it is used to make a surface rough, like a matte or satin finish. Abrasives are used in many places, including homes and large factories. They can be used for cutting, drilling, sharpening, or even sanding.

How does this work? Most abrasives rely on being harder than the material they are rubbing. The abrasive grains, called grit, often have rough edges and sharp points.

When force is applied, these points press into the surface. This causes small fragments of the material to break away. The process can be faster if the grains are large or if the material is very hard. Using a lubricant or coolant can also help by carrying away heat and waste material.

People have used different kinds of abrasives for a very long time. Natural stones were once considered the best for sharpening tools. Today, advances in technology have changed this idea. Many synthetic abrasives are now made to be just like natural minerals. For example, corundum occurs naturally in the earth. However, it is now more common to manufacture it from bauxite. Diamond is another example that is found in nature but also made in factories.

There are many different types of abrasive materials. Some are natural, like sand, garnet, or pumice. Others are synthetic, such as silicon carbide or boron carbide.

Abrasives can also come in different shapes. Bonded abrasives use a binder, like clay or resin, to hold grains in a shape like a wheel.

Coated abrasives have grit stuck to a backing like paper or cloth. Sandpaper is a very common version of a coated abrasive.

We see abrasives working in many parts of our daily lives. Toothpaste uses tiny particles like calcium carbonate to polish teeth.

Mechanics use heavy grinding wheels to work on metal parts. Even skin care uses abrasives, such as oatmeal or almond, for exfoliation. Some people even use sand or glass beads for sandblasting. It is amazing how many different ways these hard materials help us shape our world.
