They also decrease friction and help achieve a finer finish.

Diamond dust is another example, though synthetic diamonds are used extensively today. Corundum occurs naturally but is now more commonly manufactured from bauxite. Synthetic abrasives are often chemically and physically identical to natural minerals. They are simply manufactured rather than mined. Some natural minerals, like zirconia alumina, are so rare that industries prefer synthetic versions. Common artificial abrasives include silicon carbide, boron carbide, and cubic boron nitride, also known as Borazon. 
Abrasives are also shaped into different forms, such as bonded or coated abrasives. A bonded abrasive consists of abrasive material held within a matrix called a binder. This binder is often made of clay, resin, glass, or rubber. These are commonly shaped into blocks, sticks, or wheels. Grinding wheels are cylinders that rotate at high speeds. Because electric motors create high radial stress, these wheels must be strong so they do not fly apart. 

Coated abrasives consist of abrasive grains fixed to a flexible backing. This backing can be paper, cloth, rubber, resin, polyester, or metal. Sandpaper is a very common example of a coated abrasive.
