Gold panning is a simple way to find gold. It is a type of placer mining. This means people take gold from placer deposits. These deposits are often found in river beds.

Panning is a very low cost method. Many people who love geology enjoy it. It is much simpler than other mining ways. Some people do it as a fun hobby. Others in Alaska still do it for work.

There is a specific way the work happens. First, a person finds a good deposit. They scoop the dirt into a pan. Then they add water to the pan. The person shakes and moves the pan. This step is called stratification.

This process helps heavy things sink down. Gold is very heavy and sinks to the bottom. Light materials rise to the top. The person washes those light materials away. The heavy gold stays in the pan for collection.

People have been doing this for a long time. The first records come from ancient Rome. Romans used pans and sluices to find gold. They looked in streams and on mountainsides.

Later, the Spanish introduced new tools to new places. They brought the batea to Mexico and South America. This is a large wooden pan. It is about 20 inches across. These help when there is not much water.

There are many different types of pans today. Some are made of heavy steel or iron. Others are made of high-impact plastic. Plastic pans do not rust or corrode.

Many plastic pans have ridges called riffles. Prospectors often like green or red pans. These colors make gold and black sand stand out. In Japan, people use a yuri-ita. This is a rectangular wooden pan. You use a rocking motion to find the gold.

Panning is a key part of larger mining. It is used in a step called assaying. This helps find how much gold is in the dirt.

Even skilled panners can only work a little bit of dirt. Large mines use much bigger machines. For example, the Super Pit in Western Australia is huge. It uses large extractors instead of pans. Panning is still great for finding gold veins. These veins are the source of the gold deposits.
