Silver is a very precious metal. It has a high economic value around the world. Most of the silver we use comes from mining it from the Earth.

It is often found mixed with other metals like copper and lead. This makes it hard to get out. Some minerals like argentite or chlorargyrite contain the silver. In 2008, people used about 25,900 metric tons of silver globally. Mining can affect the environment, animals, and people.

Miners use different ways to get the ore out of the ground. They might use open pit mines or underground shafts.

Sometimes they use explosives to break big veins of ore into smaller pieces. These pieces are put into mine cars to be lifted to the surface. Once the ore is out, it undergoes comminution. This is a way to crush the ore into a fine powder. This helps expose the tiny grains of silver for chemical processing.

After that, workers might use froth flotation or a cyanide process to extract the metal.

People have been mining silver for a very long time. The historical record goes back to 3,000 BC in Anatolia.

In ancient Greece, silver helped the economy grow. The mines at Laurion provided money for the city of Athens. By 100 AD, the center of mining moved to Spain. The Romans were very important in the history of silver mining. Even the Vikings traveled to find and trade silver.

Many different places produce silver today. Mexico was the largest producer in 2014. It produced 5,000 metric tons of silver that year.

Other big producers include Canada, Peru, Bolivia, Australia, and the United States. In the 1800s, silver rushes happened in places like Nevada and Colorado. The Comstock Lode in Nevada was a major discovery in 1859. These big finds changed how much silver the world could make.

We can also get silver from things we already have. This is called recycling. About 5,000 tons of silver are recovered from scrap every year.

We can find silver in jewelry, coins, and silverware. Electronics are also a very important source of recycled silver. There are a few ways to do this. One way is electrolysis, which uses electricity to collect the metal. Another way is precipitation, which uses special agents to pull silver out of a liquid. This helps us use the same silver over and over again.
