Uranium is a special material found deep inside the Earth.

People mine this ore to create energy for our world. Most of the mined uranium goes to nuclear power plants. In 2022, the world produced almost 50,000 tons of it. Kazakhstan, Canada, and Namibia are the top three producers. Together, these three lands make 69% of the world's supply.

There are two main ways that workers get uranium from the ground. The first way is called in-situ leaching, which makes up 57% of production. In this method, a liquid is pumped down drill holes. This liquid dissolves the uranium out of the ore deposit. Then, the liquid is pumped back up to the surface.

The second way is conventional mining, which makes up 43% of production. This involves using open-pit mines or deep underground tunnels.

Workers grind the ore into tiny, even pieces. They use chemicals to pull the uranium out of the material.

Humans have been finding and using uranium for a very long time. Martin Heinrich Klaproth discovered the element before the year 1789. He found it in a mineral called pitchblende.

In the 1800s, people used uranium to color glass. Mining also began in places like Bohemia and Colorado during that time. In 1898, Pierre and Marie Curie worked with pitchblende. Marie Curie even identified a new element called radium from it. These discoveries changed how we understand science and medicine.

Uranium is found in many different types of rocks and places. Some uranium is in sandstone, which is often easier to mine.

Other uranium is found in rocks called conglomerates. These are very old rocks that are over two billion years old. Some deposits are called hydrothermal veins that fill cracks in the earth.

Large mines like the Olympic Dam mine hold huge amounts of ore. The McArthur River mine in Canada is another very important site. Different countries like Australia and China also produce many tons every year.

Once the uranium is out of the ground, it must be prepared. The mining process often creates a dry powder called yellowcake.

Most nuclear power plants need something called enrichment. Natural uranium only has 0.72% of the part needed for power. Enrichment raises that amount to between 3% and 5%. This makes the fuel strong enough for light water reactors. This is how the energy from the rocks becomes electricity for our homes.
