People mine it to make power. Most of it goes to nuclear power plants. In 2022, people made almost 50,000 tons of it. Kazakhstan, Canada, and Namibia are the top producers.

There are two main ways to get uranium. The first way is in-situ leaching. This is a set of steps that uses liquid. A liquid is pumped down holes into the ground. This liquid dissolves the uranium from the rocks. Then, the liquid is pumped back up to the surface.

The second way is conventional mining. This means digging big pits or deep tunnels.

Workers grind the rocks into tiny pieces. They use chemicals to take the uranium out. This makes a dry powder called yellowcake.

Most power plants need uranium enrichment. This is a way to make the uranium stronger. It raises the amount of uranium in the fuel. Natural uranium only has 0.72% of the part needed for power. Enrichment raises that to 3% or even 5%.
