Manganese nodules are small rocks on the sea floor.

They are made of many layers of metal. These layers grow around a tiny center, called a nucleus. This nucleus can be a small rock or a piece of old sea life.

Most nodules are about the size of hen eggs. They can be smooth or very bumpy.

These rocks grow at a very slow pace. They might grow only one centimeter every million years! They form in two main ways. One way is called hydrogenetic growth. This happens when metals fall from the water above. The other way is called diagenetic growth. This happens when metals come from the mud on the sea floor.

Nodules are special because they hold many useful metals. They contain manganese and iron. They also have nickel, copper, and cobalt. Because they have these metals, people are interested in mining them. Some large groups of nodules sit in the deep Pacific Ocean. One big area is the Clarion-Clipperton zone.

Scientists study these areas to find more metals.
