A concretion is a hard mass of rock.

It forms inside layers of soil or soft rock. These rocks often look like round balls or eggs.

They can be very small. Some are as big as three meters wide!

How do they form? It starts with a nucleus. A nucleus is a center point. This center might be a leaf, a tooth, or a shell.

Then, minerals dissolved in water settle around that center. The minerals act like glue. They stick tiny bits of sediment together. This makes the concretion much harder than the rock around it. Over time, wind and water wash away the soft rock. This leaves the hard concretions behind.

Some concretions have special cracks. We call these septarian concretions. These have cracks filled with minerals like calcite.

These cracks can look like many small blocks joined together. Concretions are not fossils themselves. But they often protect fossils inside. This is why people break them open to find old bones.
