Aragonite is a special type of mineral. It is made of calcium carbonate. This is the same material found in calcite. However, aragonite has a different crystal shape.

It belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system. This means its tiny building blocks are arranged in a specific way. Some aragonite looks like long needles. Other kinds look like columns or fibers. Sometimes it even looks like branching flowers. These branching shapes are called flos-ferri. This name comes from its look near iron mines in Carinthia.

This mineral forms in many different ways. It can grow through physical steps in water. It can also grow through biological steps in living things. Many sea animals use aragonite to build. Mollusks use it to make their shells. Corals use it to make their hard skeletons. Some sea sponges use it too. In the ocean, it can form as sand on the sea floor. It also forms as marine cements in the sediment. In caves, it can grow into shapes called speleothems. These include stalactites and cave flowers known as anthodites.

People have known about this mineral for a long time. It was named in 1797. The name comes from Molina de Aragón in Spain. This place is in the Province of Guadalajara. In Spain, aragonite is often found inside gypsum. It can also be found in France. There is a famous aragonite cave in Slovakia. It is called the Ochtinská Aragonite Cave. In the United States, you can find it in Carlsbad Caverns. People even mined it in a place called Aragonite, Utah. That town is now a ghost town.

Aragonite has some very interesting rules. It is a high pressure form of calcium carbonate. This means it often forms in rocks under great pressure. It can also form when magnesium is present in water. Magnesium can stop calcite from growing. This helps the aragonite grow instead. However, aragonite is not very stable near the Earth's surface. It tends to change into calcite over a long time. This change can take millions of years. Because of this, it is hard to find very old aragonite.

We use aragonite in many helpful ways today. People use it in aquaria for sea life. It helps mimic the conditions of a coral reef. It also keeps the water at a good pH level. This helps prevent the shells of sea creatures from dissolving. Scientists have also tested it to clean water. It can help remove pollutants like zinc, cobalt, and lead. This makes it useful for cleaning wastewater. It is a tiny mineral that does many big jobs.
