life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A pearl is a hard, shiny object. It grows inside a living animal with a shell. This animal is called a mollusk.

Pearls form when a tiny object gets stuck inside the animal. This object might be a parasite or a piece of tissue. The animal tries to protect itself. It builds a pearl sac around the object. This sac lets out many thin layers of nacre. Nacre is a material that also makes up mother-of-pearl.

These layers are made of calcium carbonate. This is the same stuff found in many shells.

Some pearls are natural. They happen by accident in the wild. These are very rare. Most pearls today are cultured. This means people help them grow on farms.

In saltwater, people often use a small bead to start the pearl. In freshwater, many pearls grow without a bead.

Pearls can be many shapes. Some are round and smooth. Others are bumpy and are called baroque pearls. They can even be dyed many colors.
